ICS 414 Reflection

11 May 2022

Short Summary

During the spring semester of 2022 in the class of software engineering 2, we were only given one project to do. Make a presentable website for the Volunteer Ally organization to allow organizations and volunteers to find each other easier. We were split into fairly decent size groups of 7 people, however dividing up the work was a bit awkward. In our group, we had 4 people who were working on the core functionality of the website, making the actual site up and running. Then the other 3 people kind of pick up the other miscellaneous jobs like simple design and populating the database. I was one of the 3 people picking up some of the other less important work of the project. I did attempted to work on the google map implementation but it didn’t work out. I was only able to get the live map working with some static marker, I wasn’t able to get our data to be properly read and labeled on the map. It was a bit complicated process because the map wanted a latitude and longitude however we used a street address as our location. It ended up not working out and so we didn’t make the map visible unless you know the correct directory. Other then that, I populated our events with a fair numbers of event to make it seem busy.

Reflecting

Looking back I feel like I should had picked up more of the work but I felt lost with what we’re doing. There was a lot of work being passed around the 4 people and it felt like I couldn’t pick up what they were putting down since as soon there’s a problem, another person already got the solution to it. On one hand, I’m grateful for have a good team that basically carried me through when I was having issue at home but on the other hand I don’t think I got the best experience out of this class. Sure, I experienced what it’s like to work in a larger than 3 people group and again I don’t think I contributed a significant amount to the project. Maybe that’s point I’m suppose to get, not everyone is going to be able to play a big part of the play. Communication was pretty good throughout the semester, mostly everyone was talking or giving their opinion or explaining their situation and what not. We felt consistant since we would always be the group that was in class working and talking. I could have done a lot more than I did this semester and I hope that I would be able to improve myself more.
